Roman collaborates with the Jahn Research Group of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) as an honorary fellow in researching the impact of natural disasters on global food security. As a well-known agricultural risk transfer specialist, his main work is currently with the International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group) in developing index-based risk transfer solutions for the agriculture sector.
Roman worked over 15 years in the agriculture (re)insurance industry on all main aspects of agriculture risk transfer including work for reinsurance companies (Partner Re, Converium and Swiss Re), developing new national agriculture insurance schemes (e.g., Brazil and Vietnam) and leading the development of agriculture risk quantification models for China and India at the Asia Risk Centre, which became part of Risk Management Solutions.
Having worked in Singapore for 6 years and been at the forefront of the development of agriculture insurance in Asia, has provided Roman with a deep understanding of the challenges of emerging markets and new risk transfer schemes. Dr Hohl held various advisory appointments including work with the World Economic Forum (food security in SE Asia) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (catastrophe risk assessment) while serving as adjunct professor and deputy director at the Institute of Catastrophe Risk Management (ICRM) of the Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and as an adjunct senior research fellow at the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) of the National University of Singapore.
Roman Hohl holds a PhD in Geoscience (Atmosphere) from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). Research from his PhD thesis was used to develop the first probabilistic hail model for the European insurance industry. Dr Hohl contributed numerous articles to research journals and the risk transfer media including several television interviews.
